Joe Tilson originally worked as a carpenter and joiner before attending Saint Martin’s School of Art and later the Royal College of Art in London. One of the founding figures of British Pop art in the early 1960s, Tilson has been a lifelong dedicated printmaker and has gained a reputation as one of Britain’s foremost artists producing prints, multiples, constructions, paintings and reliefs. He has drawn a lifetime of inspiration from Italy, first visiting in 1955. Exhibiting globally since the 1960s, Tilson was elected a Royal Academician in 2001. In 2019, Tilson won the Charles Wollaston award for the most distinguished work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. A brand-new comprehensive monograph on the artist was published by Lund Humphries in 2023.
