He has drawn a lifetime of inspiration from Italy, first visiting in 1955. Exhibiting globally since the 1960s, Tilson was elected a Royal Academician in 2001. In 2019, Tilson won the Charles Wollaston award for the most distinguished work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. A brand-new comprehensive monograph on the artist was published by Lund Humphries in 2023.
