Mona Hatoum’s poetic and political work incorporates installations, sculpture, video, photography and works on paper. Hatoum started her career in the 1980s making visceral video and performance work that focused intensely on the body. Since the early 1990s, however, she has increasingly created large-scale installations that aim to engage the viewer in conflicting emotions of desire and revulsion, fear and fascination. In her sculptures, Hatoum transforms familiar, everyday items such as chairs, cots and kitchen utensils into works that seem foreign, dangerous or even threatening. In T42 (gold), with a humorous touch of surrealism, Hatoum has subverted the basic form of a white china tea cup by doubling it so that the resulting object suggests something highly intimate, depicting two forms so close they have merged together.

Terms and Conditions: Please note all works will be available for collection from Wednesday 8 November 2023 at Freedom from Torture offices, 111 Isledon Road, London N7 7JW. The artwork will be safely stored, free of charge until Friday 15 December 2023. Alternatively, Freedom from Torture can help organise national and international delivery of artworks through a third party, to the winner. The winning bidder will be responsible for all delivery costs and will be invoiced directly by the third party.
